The heart goes pitter pat

November 29, 2008

jean_dujardin

So nice to find a new object for my unrequited ridiculous obsession.  The other evening I finally watched OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies — a sort of French spoof of a James Bond type.  Starring the wry and seductive Jean Dujardin.  Oh, merde and merci.  Sigh and tingle.  Just look at that face.  And the most adorable quirky smile.  I know, I’m an old fool, damn it!  Why fantasize about something attainable?  That’s like making a grocery list, folks.   Jean can du my jardin any day of the week.  This little clip just sends me.

Rachel in Bolivia (not)

September 19, 2008

The situation in Bolivia (not very well publicized in these parts) proved to be so intense that my dear niece and all her Peace Corps fellows were actually airlifted to Lima, Peru over the weekend.  As of this morning she sounds like she has a plan for the immediate future.  I would never have been so stout-hearted and even-minded at that age!  Read more….

Bag Fetish

March 24, 2008

brazillarge.jpgReally, I know I shouldn’t look at glossy design magazines but I cannot help myself. My eyes glaze over and my lust for consumer goods steams out of my pores like lust steaming out of my pores. Paging through the latest shiny seductive issue of Wallpaper I happed across this Brasil Bag I’ve no use for because I can’t afford to go anywhere. So will someone please explain my unquenchable covetousness for high-priced luggage?

Musical Madness

March 7, 2008

I came across these guys while shirking my duties and strolling through the magical internet world. Watch it now and feel the ridiculous joy. Then go subscribe to their videos on YouTube and tell them how wonderful they are and wish there were more people like this skipping around the planet!

Building a Better Tomorrow

February 12, 2008

rachelThis little girl grew up to be a fine young lady and now she is off with the Peace Corps in Bolivia. It probably amazes you to find out that the Flaming Curmudgeon is related to such a fine, upstanding, intrepid young woman. My niece. Too bad none of that empathy and good breeding wears off on me! Oh, well, enjoy reading about her travails and adventure over the next couple of years. She makes an old dyed-in-the wool curmudgeon sorta proud and soft in the center. Okay, well the pizza makes me soft at the center, but, still, she’s a good egg.

Oscar nomination

January 22, 2008
marioncotillard.jpgHooray! Marion Cotillard was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar®! I would love her to win as you know how I feel about her performance but I just have this feeling this year’s award will go to Julie Christie — I’ll be getting Away From Her from Netflix in the next few days so I’ll let you know even if you don’t care. And Johnny Depp got a nomination also but I think the money is riding on Mr. Day-Lewis this year. Oh, well, exactly why do I care?

Golden Globes

January 14, 2008
I’m so pleased that Johnny Depp was honored for Sweeney Todd. lamome-stills-003.jpgAlso Jon Hamm and MadMen on AMC! Stylish and sexy. The announcement special was one of the oddest events I’ve ever seen. What in the hell was up with Billy Bush’s hair? Maybe he should go to Joseph Michael salon. The award I was most happy about was the one for the dazzling Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose (which has now been retitled La Mome). I finally watched my Netflix DVD of this film last week after letting it sit around since before Thanksgiving. Pow, what a performance! She is stunning as the older Piaf — watch her shake, it’s breathtaking! And she lip syncs so seamlessly that you believe she is really singing the songs. If you haven’t seen it, do. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
